gumWhat are your experiences of those visits to the GUM clinic for your sexual health MOT? Were you made to feel welcome and at ease or did you leave feeling judged? Have you ever left with unanswered questions because you had forgotten to ask, did not have time or did not feel comfortable asking. Would you have prefered to speak to another gay man?

Well I have certainly had my bad experiences at the GUM clinic. A bad experience can live long in the memory and get in the way of that regular check up routine we all know we should be getting in to. But to be fair, my bad experiences were in 2006/7 and not in Wakefield. Am I right to still be nervous based on experiences from 8 years ago in another city.

The good news is that in Wakefield we are fortunate to have an excellent HIV and sexual health centre, Josephine Butler, with some of the shortest waiting times and a friendly team of out Gay men at the heart of it all. Dr Lee is in fact one of the few out Gay sexual health doctors in the region.

My personal experience as a regular for the past four years has been very good, but you can make your own mind up because we have invited Dr Lee and the gay male team to a specially arranged event. It is an opportunity to meet them socially and ask them questions in a more relaxed environment with a drink (non-alcoholic) and some nibbles. They were keen to come and you are welcome to join us!

The event will take place on Thursday 9 May.
5.30pm for food and drinks
6.30pm for a quick discussion and then its Q&A with Dr Lee and his team, finishing at 9pm
It will take place at Suite 1 Trinity Buildings, Calder Vale Rd WF1 5PE.

To book a place (I need numbers for catering) or for more information you can ring me, Mark Tyson on 07955 005 113, 01924 211 116/7 or email m.tyson@mesmac.co.uk. I am also available on Facebook, add Mark MESMAC and private message me there.
