Thomas Wales’ work with and involving the LGB&T community at a local, national and international level is immense. His drive and ambition to make the world a fair, safe and equal place to live in regardless of our sexuality or gender knows no bounds making him a Positive Role Model.

The co-founder of the community website Gay and its associated social network pages has entertained, informed and advised many from the LGB&T and beyond, Thomas’s work on the site has helped the Wakefield community become closer and enabled many to access an important LGB&T social hub preventing many LBG&T’s from feeling isolated and alone.

He has worked relentlessly with the local and national LGB&T community especially within his various roles on the Wakefield Pride organising committee and was the sole inspiration and drive that enabled Pride to return to the heart of Wakefield on the city centre precinct amongst the iconic backdrop of the Wakefield Cathedral. Thomas is also now a consultant on many other Pride events across the country.

He has fostered links with organisation like the Wakefield Cathedral amongst others and see’s networking and branching out as the only true way to create a fully integrated, equal community.

Through his work at Thomas has also worked with and alongside Yorkshire Mesmac, helping to organise HIV awareness events and speaking at major events to groups about issues such as mental illness in the LGB&T community and much more. Designing pamphlets and publicity material and distributing it using the latest in modern technologies to ensure the messages reach their widest possible audience. Operation Red was a range of events for National HIV Testing Week and World AIDS Day (23rd Nov – 1st Dec) which helped to increase the number of people testing for HIV by 400% compared with the previous quarter in Wakefield.

Mark Tyson (Mark Mesmac), of Yorkshire MESMAC, said `Thomas’s creativity and energy gave our campaign a visibility and vigour it would not otherwise have had.`

Thomas has organised fun and interesting events which have helped to encourage a healthy scene within Wakefield, giving the LGB&T community a safe place to meet and to socialise.

Recently Thomas has enrolled on a Stonewall Youth Volunteering scheme which he is on the forefront of the campaign against Homophobic Bullying in our schools. Working with local schools in his community, he works with both students and teachers about the affects of Homophobic Bullying and how to increase awareness in the classroom of LGB people.

Thomas Wales hopes to continue his hard work in schools and work places and encourage through his dedication, enthusiasm and many talents the full acceptance and understanding of Gay and Transgender members from the outside in and also continue to help and advise the curious, questioning or vulnerable members of the community. He is a true Positive Role Model.
