The existence LGBTQ* in UKIP group has officially been permitted by the UK Independence Party’s National Executive Committee ahead of UKIP’s annual national conference in Birmingham.

Under the slogan “Britain should be out and proud!”, the group aims to provide a safe social and discussion space for LGBT and other members in UKIP, and to reach out to members of the LGBT community who may have considered voting UKIP before.

“I am delighted that the NEC has approved the formation and existence of the group” says founder-chairman, Thomas Booker, “UKIP is an all-inclusive, libertarian political party with a genuine, plausible and sustainable vision for the future of the UK, and we would like to extend that message to the LGBT community.”

Deputy chair and co-founder, Nathan Garbutt, from Pontefract, added “UKIP has come under criticism in the past for the wholly unacceptable views of one or two outspoken members. The formal approval from the NEC of our existence goes to show that UKIP does not have any issue with LGBT people. We believe that it doesn’t matter if you’re straight, gay, male, female, transgendered or identify with any other sexuality or orientation, if you share our vision for the future of this country, come and join us.”

The group’s first major event will be at the national conference on Saturday 22nd September, when Thomas will take part in a Fringe event debate, arguing the case for equal civil marriage.

“The idea that civil marriage should be reserved for unions between a man and a woman is a wholly outdated remnant of the times when homosexuality was outlawed and officially rendered ‘abnormal’”, explains Thomas. “I believe there exists no good moral reason for marriage and civil partnerships at the civil level to remain discriminatory on the basis of tradition, or for an unsupportable belief that children are best raised in a traditional, one-man one-woman parent household.”
