And it’s All Change for the better

Take a look
Following the renewal of our funding for Wakefield, we at Yorkshire MESMAC have returned to our newly refurbished and air conditioned offices on Calder Vale Rd. To celebrate we would like to invite our service users past and present, our friends and our allies to an Open House event on Saturday 6th April from 12pm-3pm. Food and refreshments will be laid on as part of what will be a fun social event. Our meeting room spaces are available free of charge to any meeting or group from the communities we serve who are working for the benefit of the communities we serve so come and take a look.

Tell us what you think
The event will also provide an opportunity for you to discuss with staff the shape of the services we will be providing in Wakefield; have your say about the services we have provided to you in the past; and tell us what your hopes and expectations of us are for the future. Your comments will help inform the development of Yorkshire MESMAC’s next five year plan. Work on this is happening now so it is the perfect time to have your say.

HIV Testing
The good news for Wakefield means that we can also announce big improvements to the availability of our award winning Rapid Result HIV testing service. It will now be available from our Calder Vale Rd offices:
Every Monday 12pm-7pm (just drop-in)
Every first Saturday of the month 12pm-3pm (just drop-in)
Or by appointment Monday to Thursday (during office hours)
Current advise says that the most at risk should test for HIV once every three months and that everyone else should test at least once a year. We aim to make testing for HIV as convenient and supportive as possible so that we can all know our status and take control of our health and future.

The New Union Reopens
In addition, as the New Union has now reopened, we will resume our monthly HIV, Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea testing drop-in there as well. It will be held on every third Saturday of the month between 4pm and 8pm. We would like to wish Paul Wood and his team well with their plans for the New Union and hope Wakefield gets behind and supports all its scene venues moving forward.

LGBTQ Young People
Finally we would like to introduce you to AMP. AMP is a newly formed group for 18-25 year olds in Wakefield. It’s aim is to provide a safe supportive space in which LGBTQ young people can relax, be accepted, socialise and grow in knowledge and confidence. It will meet between 6.30pm and 9pm on a Wednesday in Wakefield city centre. The group will run parallel to ‘The Fruitbowl’ youth project which will provide a similar supportive environment for younger LGBTQ people aged 13-19 on a Monday night.

Our offices can be found at Suite 1, Trinity Buildings, Wakefield WF1 5PE. For further information on any of these items you can ring Mark Tyson on 07955 005 113, 01924 211 116/7 or email m.tyson@mesmac.co.uk. He is also available on Facebook, add Mark MESMAC and private message him.
