Great News! Yorkshire MESMAC is repeating its popular HIV Peer Educators / Free Gym Membership scheme. For those of you who don’t know, all you need to do is to book onto any one of their HIV Awareness sessions, details below, and at the end of the session you fill in a form and Wakefield District Council’s Leisure Services will send you a three months Premium Aspire membership totally FREE of charge.

We asked Mark Tyson, who developed the scheme, how it works and why Yorkshire MESMAC are doing it in Wakefield.

‘Some time ago we applied for and secured a small grant to improve the health and fitness of the LGB&T community in Wakefield who experience severe health inequalities. We link this to our core objective as an organisation, the prevention of HIV transmissions, through the Peer Educators scheme.’

‘Participants attend a workshop with all the most up to date information on the ever changing HIV epidemic and discuss how they might help spread the information amongst friends and family. They then get a certificate of attendance and a FREE Aspire membership as a sort of incentive for doing it. From our point of view it is a great way of getting the key messages out there on HIV and helping to improve the health and wellbeing of LGB&T people at the same time.’

aspireSo tell us about the three months FREE Aspire Membership

‘Premium Aspire Membership allows unlimited access to Gyms, Fitness Classes and Public Swimming across all 8 leisure and swimming pool facilities across the district run by the council, including Sun Lane Leisure. At Sun Lane Leisure, you will receive an electronic locker key and will have access to the ‘fast ticket access’ system.’
